In the initial stages of my planning, I find writing ideas down on paper helps me with my thought process. My wife suggested choosing pollution as a theme for my project and I liked it so I began to think about what pollution was and meant. Pollution brought up a lot of ideas; but most of these ideas were difficult to put into the context of landscape, for example health issues. However, once I had done some research and decided to concentrate on the pollutant elements themselves, I now had narrowed down the subject matter for the theme and although this presented new challenges I could at least concentrate my thoughts and ideas. For example I started to try to use ideas of composition as a tool to imply meaning. I wanted to create images that reflected something in the character of the pollutants, say a pollutant that affects respiratory conditions; so I sketched ideas that suggested strangulation / restriction. This led to the idea of photographing the cycling barriers to the entrance to a park.
